National Diabetes MonthNational diabetes month is celebrated to spread awareness about this disease. We all know that a lot of people are suffering from diabetes. In fact, nearly 26 million children and adults in America live with diabetes, and another 79 million at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The disease is taking a devastating physical, emotional and financial toll on the person and the family who always live with caution to prevent its complication.

These are just the facts which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention paint a desperate situation about diabetes:

  • Every 17 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes.

  • Diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined.

  • Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take steps to Stop Diabetes.

National Diabetes Month: Campaign For Diabetes

Though substantial progress is made in combating diabetes, the number of Americans burdened by this disease continues to grow at a rapid pace. This is the reason why a “National Diabetes Month” is established to commemorate the work of caregivers, researchers, medical professionals, and advocates who lead the fight against diabetes, and to encourage people to help fight the disease. The president of United States, Barack Obama proclaim the month of November starting this 2011 as National Diabetes Month. During this time, he said that we remember those we have lost to diabetes, and we stand with the millions of people who have been touched by its consequences. All people including those in different sectors like school systems, government agencies, non-profit organizations, health care providers, research institutions, and other interested groups are encourage to join in activities that raise diabetes awareness and help prevent, treat, and manage the disease.

Aside from these ways to engage oneself during National Diabetes Month, those suffering the disease were given the opportunity to join in programs that might help them. Also, during this month, there are some programs that make women and men aware of obesity which might predispose one to diabetes. They’re giving seminars and health teachings.  Doctors and specialist even stated that if people would get out and exercise, it really increases your metabolism and decreases your risk of developing diabetes because you’re moving your muscles; you’re getting your metabolism up. Every little bit helps.

National Diabetes Month: In Conclusion

The truth still remains that keeping diabetes at bay largely depends on the decisions we make every day – in our community, in the kitchen, in the street, at the office and in restaurants. Let us all become involve and fight the disease that many people suffer.
